For this shoot, I wanted to try creating a fake window light in my warehouse studio. It’s actually more complicated than people think to perfect the look. It took two lights: The first is the obvious hard fake window light coming in from the side. This is an Amaran 300c light with a spotlight attachment on it, along with a gobo that looks like a barred window! This on its own would look way too contrasty, though, with very bright spots and very dark shadows. To bring the ambient light up and to soften up the light on the skin, I used a 7′ umbrella with a second light. The secret for this kind of look is the ratio of brightness between the two lights. To make it look natural, I played with the brightness of the window light until it was brighter than the ambient light, but not so bright that it blew out the highlights. There is both a members-only and a public teaser. Enjoy!
