Lexy and I both often gravitate to shooting very close to sunset: I often like just before, and she likes just after. Sometimes it’s fun to shoot a little earlier, though, and you end up with much harsher contrast between the highlights and the shadows. If you expose for the highlights, you end up with very deep shadows. If you can shoot backlit, like in this video, your background can almost fall away to blackness with the intensity of the highlights! It’s a fun look that works well as long as somebody’s skin is nice. For rougher skin or skin with blemishes or pimples, sometimes shooting in hard light can accentuate those features, in which case I’ll fall back to shooting in very soft light to mellow out the shadows, which can help hide imperfections in the skin.

In this video, we shot this in our backyard on our lawn! We used a $20 mister from the hardware store to create the look. For the lens, I used a vintage Jupiter 85mm, which has a very distinct vintage look when shot wide open. If you stop it down, the lens gets sharper, but at F2, the corners get quite soft and the bokeh has a very soft, creamy look to it. Perfect for the whimsical vibe of this video.

There are three versions of this video! The public teaser will give you a taste, with the Members version being much longer and more naked. Then, for our dedicated members who have been with us for longer than six months, I put together an extended version with parts that I would normally cut out due to them being a bit extra spicy. Enjoy!

  1. Excellent interplay of light and shadow, focus and blur in these. Love some interesting Soviet lenses. Only wish my 6-month anniversary would come sooner!

  2. I can only fully agree with the previous speaker…

  3. love the 6 month idea!
